WhatsApp is working on a series of improvements for its mobile apps, including a so-called Vacation Mode and a silent feature for chats.
While it’s not yet known when these new options could land on Android and iOS, a report from WABetaInfo notes that WhatsApp aims to offer users more control over their conversations, so the company has started testing these features internally.
Basically, what Vacation Mode is supposed to do is to keep archived chats… well, archived. At this point, if you archive a chat and you receive a new message in the same conversation, it’s automatically un-archived. What Vacation Mode will do when enabled is to actually keep the conversation archived even if you receive a new message.
This means that in order to read new messages in a conversation you’ll have to open it manually from the archived chats screen.
